Seventy schools in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Sivaganga districts received water tanks donated by the Lions Clubs.

Presenting them to the beneficiaries at a two-day regional convention of the Lions Clubs here on Saturday, Lions District Governor V. Murugesan said that the 1,000-litre water tanks, worth Rs. 5,000 each, was being given to the needy schools in the southern districts.

The Lions Clubs had conducted dental camps and screened 85,000 children, the target being 1 lakh between July 2012 and June this year. The camps revealed that many children were regularly having junk foods.

The doctors had advised the parents of those children to ensure that their wards avoided junk food to maintain oral hygiene.

The Lions Clubs also conducted road safety campaigns for the benefit of students and saplings were planted on school premises, Mr. Murugesan said. Senior members and past district governors, and the chief guest, lyricist Snegan, addressed the gathering.
