August 05, 2011 11:47 am | Updated 11:48 am IST - MADURAI:

At least six school children suffered simple injuries when a private van collided with a lorry on the Madurai-Ramanathapuram National Highway on Thursday.

Madurai Rural Police said that the private van which was coming towards the city after picking up children from a school near Samiarthope, collided with a lorry near the Ring Road intersection at around 5.30 p.m.

The van driver suffered serious injuries while the six children sustained simple injuries. Initial probe suggested rash driving by both the van driver and the lorry driver as the cause for the accident. The names of the injured were not available.

As the news spread, panic prevailed in the area and parents rushed to the spot and took away their children for treatment at private hospitals, police added.
