59 nominations filed in six days

As many as 29 candidates, including 16 independents, filed their papers here on Saturday, the last day for filing nominations for contesting in the 16 Lok Sabha elections. A total of 59 nominations have been filed in the last six days.

The independent candidates who filed nominations were M. Meenakshi Sundaram, P. Jeyakumar, S. Arivudainambi, V. Karuppiah, T. Ramasamy, J. Manikandeswaran, S. Ganesan, V.G.R. Vasuki, V.G. Ramdoss, M. Thangam, M.R. Jothikrishnan, Raji Subash, A. Kannan, G. Kannan, P. Gopalakrishnan and K. Thangapandi.

Collector and Returning Officer L. Subramanian saw a steady stream of candidates who filed their nominations from 11 a.m.

As the number of candidates waiting to file papers rose after 2 p.m., a few nominations were also filed with District Adi-dravidar Welfare Officer Benedict Dharmarai.

The candidates representing political parties and other organisations who filed nominations included P. Ramamoorthy of All India Forward Bloc, N. Arumugapandian from Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha and K. Jeya from Tamil Maanila Sivasena Party.
