A total of 5,652 candidates failed to turn up for the written examination for Integrated Grade II police constables, jail wardens and firemen, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board at 45 centres in the district on Sunday.
The constables recruitment was for men, women and third gender. The examination, for 80 marks, was conducted between 10 a.m. and 11.20 a.m.
Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav, who is the Super Check Officer, conducted surprise inspection in a few of the 21 centres in the city limits.
Madurai Rural district Superintendent of Police Vijayendra Bidari who is the Chairman, oversaw the arrangements in the district.
Out of the total 40,469 candidates who had been issued hall tickets, 34,817 turned up. Madurai district had the highest number of candidates appearing next only to Chennai, Mr. Bidari said. A total of 45 Deputy Superintendent of Police, 106 Inspectors of Police and 498 Sub-Inspectors were among those involved in the conduct of the examination.
