In a bizarre incident, over 50 women who were working in a tank near Melur were stung by a swarm of beetles in the afternoon of Thursday.

While 27 of them were treated at the Melur Government Hospital, the others went to private hospitals. The beetles had built a huge hive on a ‘karuvelam’ tree. Fire and Rescue Service personnel removed the hive late in the night. Station Fire Officer P. Ganesan said.

Conductor assaulted

The Keezhavalavu police are on the lookout for seven persons who assaulted a TNSTC conductor on Wednesday night.

Conductor S. Jayasankar (40) had objected to two persons who were travelling on the footboard on the Melur-Singampunari route and made them alight from the bus.

Later, the duo brought few others, intercepted the bus, and assaulted the conductor.

Chain snatched

A woman lost three sovereigns of gold to a thief at Appanthirupathi on Wednesday.

Nagalakshmi (28) was returning home with her father Mani on a two-wheeler at around 1 p.m. when a motorcyclist followed them. Near Meenakshi Amman Nagar, the culprit hit their two-wheeler and made them fall. Even before the two could realise what had happened, the thief snatched the chain and sped away.

The man and his daughter sustained minor injuries. The Appanthirupathi police are investigating.
