5 killed as lorry goes out of control near Tuticorin

Five persons, including two women, were killed and one was seriously injured when a lorry hit a bicycle and a car in Tuticorin district on Thursday night.

The driver of the Tuticorin-bound lorry lost control of the vehicle as it first hit a bicycle, killing the rider Bhagyam (55) on the spot near Tharuvaikulam, police said.

The lorry then collided head-on with a car coming from Pattinamaruthur. The car driver Seeni Mohamed (44), N.Zenath Beevi (28), K,Syed Ali and Kasali (21) were killed while Nagoor Kani was seriously injured.

The lorry driver fled the scene soon after the accident, police said adding a hunt was on for him.

A police vehicle, which rushed to the spot, skidded off the road and fell into a gorge, leaving a few policemen injured.
