180 packets recovered from a house

In a major catch, the city police arrested four persons, including two women, and seized 376 kilograms of ganja valued at around Rs. 35 lakh from them here on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Thirunavukkarasu told media persons that during a vehicle check near Teppakulam on Monday, a team checked a two-wheeler. They found a few packets in a paper bag with the pillion rider. It was revealed that it was ganja and, according to their confession, it was intended for sale to their regular customers at some points the city.

Investigation with the help of Prohibition Enforcement Wing led to a search at the house of the ganja seller at Maharaja Nagar near Viraganoor. The police team realised that a family of four had been procuring the narcotic substance from Andhra Pradesh in bulk. After bringing them secretly to the city through different modes of transport, they sold the ganja in small quantities.

The arrested persons were: Silambarasan, Perumayi, Paulraj and Mariammal. The police also found ganja packed in 2 kg packets. About 180 packets were recovered from the house. A hunt is on to nab three others, police said and added that the arrested persons were produced before a judicial magistrate.

Meanwhile, a press release said that the Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur commended the police for unravelling the case swiftly. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing officers led by Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police Sugumaran, who were instrumental in zeroing in on the offenders, were also commended.
