Police arrested 30 DMK functionaries, including former Deputy Mayor P. M. Mannan, among others, on a charge of defacing public walls here on Friday. They were granted bail after appearing in court.

Police said that cases were registered following complaints that DMK cadre were allegedly defacing walls, which was a violation under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Open Place Disfigurement Act.

Only a week ago, the Corporation authorities had swung into action and removed the unauthorised hoardings and cleaned up walls defaced by the political parties. Warnings were issued against those who indulged in such acts. They were instructed to seek prior permission from the authorities.

DMK party men have been painting the city walls in anticipation of Union Minister and DMK south zone organising secretary M. K. Alagiri’s birthday on January 30.
