Police arrested 30 DMK functionaries, including former Deputy Mayor P. M. Mannan, among others, on a charge of defacing public walls here on Friday. They were granted bail after appearing in court.
Police said that cases were registered following complaints that DMK cadre were allegedly defacing walls, which was a violation under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Open Place Disfigurement Act.
Only a week ago, the Corporation authorities had swung into action and removed the unauthorised hoardings and cleaned up walls defaced by the political parties. Warnings were issued against those who indulged in such acts. They were instructed to seek prior permission from the authorities.
DMK party men have been painting the city walls in anticipation of Union Minister and DMK south zone organising secretary M. K. Alagiri’s birthday on January 30.

Even though Chennai is one of the most educated city in the world with repect to number of schools, colleges, engineering colleges, medical colleges, law colleges etc, this culture of defacing walls is deep rooted in the psyche of the both educated and ill-literate communities of TamilNadu. The main culprits in this filthy culture are film industry and political parties c. Unless a jail term is given to these, Chennai will continue to be know as the " Garbage and Filth City of the World"
