In the second such incident in successive days, 25 people were injured, four of them seriously, in the bull-taming sport of Jallikattu organised in connection with Pongal festivities at Palamedu here on Friday.

Police said the seriously injured were referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital here after being given first aid at the venue by a medical team.

As many as 550 bulls were used for the Jallikattu.

Some spectators were also injured as the exit point, where the bulls were released one by one, was too crowded and players and spectators had gathered there.

Twenty-one people were injured on Thursday in a Jallikattu at Avaniapuram here.

The Supreme Court had declined permission to hold Jallikattu in 2008 following a petition filed by the Animal Welfare Board seeking a ban on the event. However, it was permitted by the apex court on certain conditions following the state government’s plea in the face of protests against the ban.

The state Assembly passed a legislation last year to regulate conduct of Jallikattu prescribing norms for holding such events and ensure the safety of animals, participants and spectators.
