A total of 164 students — 85 boys and 79 girls — did not turn up on the first day of the Plus Two board examinations on Monday in the three educational districts of Madurai, Usilampatti and Melur.

According to officials of the School Education Department, 102 private candidates also did not appear for the Language Paper I examinations conducted on Monday.

A total of 569 private candidates and 36,595 regular candidates wrote the board examinations in the three educational districts.

Madurai District Chief Educational Officer C. Amuthavalli said that the first day of the board examinations passed off smoothly without any incidents of malpractice.

Flying squad

Forty flying squads were constituted to monitor the examinations in 89 centres in Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti.

Students who wrote the examination said that the question paper was simple without any complications.

The next exam is Language Paper II which is scheduled for Wednesday.

This will be followed by English Paper I and Paper II on Thursday and Friday.

The examinations for main subjects commence on March 10.
