The Virudhunagar district police on Saturday arrested 15 persons, including school students, on charges of assaulting people and damaging roofs near Pullalakottai on Friday.
The police said Velmurugan, brother of Pullalakottai Panchayat president Sundaramoorthy, was heavily drunk and dancing at a funeral house.
As he was totally out of control, he was asked to go home.
After the funeral procession left the house, a group of men and women, armed with clubs and stones, attacked the people at the house later in the evening, damaging the tiled roofs and seven two-wheelers, Superintendent of Police S. Maheswaran said.
Around 20 persons were injured. Nine were admitted to the Government Hospital here, and others were treated as outpatients.
Policemen have been deployed at the village, and the situation was under control, he said.
Among the arrested, 12 persons were students of schools and industrial training institutes.
An official source said there had been a friction between the two groups for the past six months ever since one group objected to playing the public address system during the guru puja of a leader last year.
