The boat with the crew was immobile, due to engine failure

Fourteen fishermen of Kanyakumari district, who were reportedly stranded in a boat at mid-sea, were rescued by the Tuticorin marine police, attached to the Coastal Security Group, on Monday.

The boat with the crew was immobile and stayed afloat 11 nautical miles off Kayalpatnam coast on Sunday night, due to engine failure.

Rescue operations were launched on Sunday night, Inspector of Police, Marine, Tharuvaikulam, P.S. Ramesh Kumar, said.

The fishermen in distress dialled the ‘1093’ Helpline numbers to save them, Mr. Kumar said.

The marine police towed the stranded boat and brought it back to the Tuticorin old port safely.

The rescued were S. Robin (30), S. Lebin (30), R. Stalin (32), A. Vinil (23), C. Antony Vijayan (23), S. Sahaya Arockiadoss (18), E. Sahayaraj (45), C. Amirtharaj (48), R. Sahayaraj (47), A. Vignesh (18), Kathiston (20), E. James Britto (33), E. Vinoth (21) and M. Xavier (31). They belong to Muttom, a coastal hamlet in Kanyakumari district.
