130 shops raided in Madurai

Officials from the Labour Department conducted a surprise raid on 130 shops in Madurai that were functioning without weekly holidays for their employees.

According to a press statement from P. Subramanian, Assistant Commissioner of Labour, 119 shops were functioning without weekly holidays in places such as Nethaji Road, West Masi Street, Town Hall Road and T.P.K. Road.

Legal action had been initiated against the owners of these shops, the statement said.

The official said that all the commercial outlets should down their shutters at 10 p.m.

Second time offenders would be subjected to legal proceedings, he said. Complaints could be lodged with the officials at 0452-2604388.
