36 candidates file nomination papers in Tuticorin district

A total of 121 persons filed their nomination papers for various positions in the local bodies across the district as filing of nomination commenced on Thursday.

Following local bodies will go in for poll on October 17: Tirunelveli Corporation, Ambasamudram and Vickramasingapuram municipalities, Ervadi, Gopalasamudram, Kalakkadu, Kallidaikurichi, Manimuthar, Mela Seval, Moolakkaraipatti, Mukkoodal, Nanguneri, Naranammalpuram, Panagudi, Pattamadai, Sankar Nagar, Thirukkurunkudi, Thisaiyanvilai, Vadakku Valliyoor and Veeravanallur town panchayats and the rural local bodies under Ambasamudram, Cheranmahadevi, Kalakkadu, Maanur, Nanguneri, Palayamkottai, Pappakudi, Radhapuram and Valliyoor blocks.

Following local bodies will go in for poll on October 19: Kadayanallur, Puliyangudi, Sankarankovil, Shencottai and Tenkasi municipalities, Achchanputhur, Alangulam, Alwarkurichi, Aayikudi, Courtallam, Ilanji, Keezhapaavoor, Melagaram, Paimpozhil, S. Pudur, Royagiri, Sambavarvadakarai, Sivagiri, Sundarapandiapuram, Thiruvenkatam, Vadakaraikeezhpidaagai and Vasudevanallur and the rural local bodies under Alangulam, Kadayam, Kadayanallur, Keezhapaavoor, Kuruvikulam, Sankarankovil, Shencottai and Tenkasi.

Tuticorin

Thirty six candidates filed their nomination papers for contesting from village panchayat wards under rural local bodies here on Thursday. Model code of conduct has been effected here since September 21 as per directive of State Election Commission, according to Collector and District Election Officer Ashish Kumar.

Polling for the local bodies has been scheduled in two phases.

The first phase will be held on October 17 and the second phase on October 19. Filing of nomination papers from contestants has begun on Thursday.

Contestants could file nominations until September 29.

Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on September 30.

Last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is October 3 until 3 p.m. Counting of votes will be held on October 21 at 8 a.m.

Adequate security will be deployed on the premises of Tuticorin Corporation. Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, Commissioner of Corporation and Returning Officer said as many as 1, 500 polling personnel will be involved in the election schedule for Tuticorin Corporation comprising 60 wards.

Deposit amount for a candidate contesting for Mayor post is Rs. 4,000 and for candidates of SC / ST category, the deposit amount is Rs.2, 000.

As for the ward councillor, deposit amount for filing nominations is Rs. 2, 000 for general category and Rs. 1, 000 for SC / ST category. A total of 228 polling stations have been set up.
