For the first time, private companies offered jobs to 102 physically disabled persons and persons with developmental disorders through a mega job mela organised by the district administration here recently. Most of them joined duty in the respective companies on Saturday itself.

While one disabled got supervisory job in a spinning mill to check quality of yarn, another one joined as warden and other one became a legal adviser to a spinning mill. Thirteen persons joined duty as computer operators and rest of the recruits as industrial workers.

The job mela also provided opportunity and financial assistance to enterprising disabled to set up own business.

Collector M Vallalar, who inaugurated the mela here recently, said that disabled persons and persons with developmental disorders will always have special skills in particular field. Opportunity should be given to such persons. They were not weak minded persons.

Disabled persons should not hesitate to grab any opportunity. Over 40,000 out of total population of 20 lakhs in the district have some developmental disorders. They could not expose their skills owing to lack of opportunity only, he added.

District administration took massive efforts to bring disabled to the regular stream of life in the society. Business loan to the tune of Rs.36 lakhs will be offered to 170 disabled persons in the next financial year. Department of Rehabilitation had issued national identity card to 17,520 disabled persons so far. Monthly financial assistance of Rs.500 had been offered to 3,317 mentally retarded children and other assistance to 1,082 disabled persons so far.

A total of 67 private companies including 12 private hospitals, 11 banks, Central cooperatives banks, six educational institutions and over 600 disabled persons took part in the mega mela. Membership card of welfare board for the disabled was issued to 120 disabled persons in the camp, he added.
