Minister for Revenue and Housing E. Chandrasekharan will open a hostel, which can accommodate 98 women, at Edappally on Monday. The inauguration is scheduled for 10 a. m. at the Jawan Cross Road.

The Kerala State Housing Board built the working women’s hostel with the monetary support of Union and State governments. “The Union government has provided 75% of the cost while the State has pitched in with 25% of the cost,” said a statement issued by the Housing Board here. The expenses over and above the money provided by the Union and State governments are being met by the Housing Board. The Union government has sanctioned a total of ₹2.78 crore. Of this, ₹1.39 crore has already been received. The State government has provided ₹92.68 lakh. The Housing Board had spent ₹98 lakh, the statement added. The total cost of the project is ₹7.84 crore, which includes the price of the land.

The hostel has been built on a 28-cent plot. It is spread over three storeys and the total area is 1,481 sq.ft. There is a provision of three beds in a room for differently-abled persons on the ground floor. A day-care facility is also available for women who have little children. There is also a room that can accommodate three women, set aside for those who come to the city temporarily.

The hostel has been envisioned as an economy accommodation. The Kerala State Housing Board has already built working women’s hostels at Kakkanad in Ernakulam; Gandhi Nagar in Kottayam, Muttom in Idukki, and Pullazhi and East Chalakkudy in Thrissur. A hostel has been completed in Thiruvananthapuram. A hostel with a facility for 159 women has been completed in Kozhikode. It was inaugurated on October 8.
