A day after the construction work was launched, piling works for the Pachalam overbridge was suspended on Wednesday because of intense protest by passengers infuriated by the closure of the railway gate without alternative arrangements and the confusion over the rehabilitation of the affected traders. Tension prevailed on the work site just hours after the inauguration when people confronted the workers who reached the spot for piling works on Tuesday night.

Meet failed

Though the district administration convened a meeting of local residents and the traders who surrendered land for the overbridge, it failed to resolve the issue.

District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam said that another meeting of the representatives of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Kochi Metro Rail Limited and traders would be held on Thursday. He said no direction had been given for the suspension of the overbridge work.
