A woman was stabbed to death, allegedly by her lover, at the Cherai beach here on Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Sheethal, 30, of Muttinakam in Varapuzha. The Munambam police have taken into custody Prasanth, 28, of Nedumkunnam in Kottayam district, on charge of committing the crime.
The accused, a cable network technician, was staying on rent, along with a friend, on the first floor of the victim’s house. “The accused alleged that of late, she had been receiving many calls and messages on her mobile phone and had declined to reveal who it was despite repeated requests. This turned him suspicious and furious since he had reportedly borne the expenses incurred on her coaching for the last grade servant examination,” said K.B. Prabhulla Chandran, Dy.SP, Aluva.
On Friday morning, both of them left home, visited a nearby temple and had snacks before arriving at the beach. Mr. Chandran said that on reaching the beach, Prasanth asked the victim to shut her eyes so that he could surprise her with a gift, only to take out a knife and stab her repeatedly.
The victim, bleeding from multiple injuries, fled to a nearby resort. According to the resort staff, she pleaded to be taken to a hospital. Her clothes were blood-drenched and she was bleeding from wounds on the neck and stomach. The resort staff rushed her to a hospital at Paravur in their vehicle. But the hospital authorities referred her to a superspecialty hospital in Kochi, on finding her wounds critical. In between, the victim explained the happenings amidst her pain, before she was overcome by exhaustion. She died of the injuries before reaching the hospital, the staff said.
The incident sent shock waves in the locality and a large number of people assembled at the spot. Later, Mr. Chandran and other police officials inspected the scene of the crime.
