A woman was arrested on charge of stealing gold jewellery from the house where she worked as a maid. Swapna, 38, of Karnataka, who was living on rent near Eloor, was arrested by the Kalamassery police on the charge.

Police said gold jewellery weighing about 23 sovereigns was kept in a secret compartment of the shelf at the complainant’s house at Kalamassery. The woman allegedly used the key to open the shelf, took the gold, and threw the key into a well. The residents noted that the key was missing and broke open the door on Thursday to find the gold missing.

About 17 sovereigns of the gold were recovered from the woman’s house. She had sold the rest already, police said.

Held on charge of pawning rolled gold

The Aluva police arrested a woman on charge of borrowing Rs.17 lakh from a bank after pawning rolled gold.

Kamala Surendran of Vayalakkad allegedly handed over rolled gold to a bank near U.C. College 21 times in 2006 and 2007 to borrow about Rs.17 lakh.

Police said she had been in hiding since then and was arrested from Kannur. The bank’s appraiser Thankappan of Karumallur allegedly colluded with the woman to certify the ornaments as genuine gold. Bank officials discovered the fraud in 2010 when the woman had not come to claim the ornaments.
