What happens when the drivers of premium demo cars decide to tickle the engines and unbridle the horses under the hood to show off the car’s rev-happiness? They turn heads — of Motor Vehicles Inspectors.

These premium test car drivers seem to constantly succumb to the urge to pulverise NH 47 bypass, home to most number of premium car dealers, going by the number of instances of speed-limit breach. Surveillance cameras registered close to 300 cases of over-speeding by the drivers of the demo cars in the last one and a half years. It could be the showroom executives or the potential buyers who were behind the wheel.

With more than 150 horses on call in some of the cars up for sale, 100 km/hr are common on NH. A demo Benz was found to have even breached 150 km/hr. Dealers have been asked to hand over the list of demo cars and also details of drivers behind the wheel at the time when the violations were captured on camera.

Heavy right foot syndrome

Inter-State private bus operators seem to be bent on filling up MVD’s coffers. Since speed governors are not mandatory for buses registered outside the State, many of these buses consistently hit speeds in excess of 100 km/hr on deserted highway stretches in the night.

MVD has sent notices in not less than 700 cases of speed breach detected by surveillance cameras. Each violation is charged a fine of Rs. 400. Buses of Kallada group were captured on camera 360 times, Atlas 160 and that of Shama group 180 times.

MVD has asked for details of drivers considering the possibility that some of them could be repeat offenders. The department has warning for such drivers with heavy right foot: restrict the speed to 80km/hr or else licence will be suspended.
