KOCHI: The position adopted by private hospital managements vis-à-vis revision of nurses’ wages is unacceptable, former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here on Thursday.

“Private hospital managements’ argument that wage revision will lead to serious financial liabilities is unacceptable,” Mr. Achuthanandan said after inaugurating the valedictory session of the State meeting of United Nurses’ Association (UNA).

“Nurses make a lot of sacrifices while taking care of patients. However, hospital managements do not recognise them. Though wage revisions were recommended on several occasions, they were not implemented. Steps should be taken to put an end to the continuing exploitation in the field. There should be a mechanism for periodical wage revision,” the former Chief Minister observed.

He called for a government-level mechanism to assess the profit and loss of private hospitals. Mr. Achuthanandan said private institutions in the educational and health sectors nowadays were being operated only with profit motive.

UNA district president Jasmin Shah presided. Earlier, nurses took out a rally ahead of the valedictory session.
