Voters in their forties to call the shots in Ernakulam district

The majority of voters in the 14 Assembly constituencies in Ernakulam district are aged between 40 and 49 years.

According to the voters’ list, there are 5,36,798 voters in that age group, of whom 2,48,153 are men and 2,88,645 women. Voters aged above 80 years are a numerical minority, with their strength being 47,082.

There are 25,021 voters in the 18-19 age group, 4,18,067 in the 20-29 age bracket, 5,08,533 in the 30-39 age group, 4,31,247 in the 50-59 group, 2,83,019 in the 60-69 group and 1,32,688 in the 70-79 age group. Piravom Assembly constituency has 1,94,502 voters, the highest in the district. Ernakulam with 1,48,005 voters has the least number of voters. These constituencies also account for the maximum and minimum women voters as well.

The Election Department has deployed an extensive network of private videographers and photographers to ensure a smooth and fair conduct of polls.

Apart from covering public meetings of various parties, they will be on the lookout to capture clinching evidences of violence, booth-rigging, assault of voters, campaigning within 100 metres of polling booths, defamatory campaign, and use of harmful campaign materials.

Fresh tapes will be used to document each day’s happenings, and tapes of each day’s visuals will be handed over to the respective supervising officer at the end of the day.

The scrutiny of nominations will begin at the offices of the Returning Officers on April 30 at 11 a.m. Nominations can be withdrawn before 3 p.m. on May 2. Symbols will be allotted to candidates after 3 p.m. The list of the remaining contestants in the fray will also be prepared on the same day.
