Value-based family system and value -based education are the two strong pillars that hold the country’s heritage together, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said here on Saturday.

Speaking after presenting the Madan Mohan Malavia National Education Award to P Venkat Rangan, Vice-Chancellor, Amrita Vidya Peetham, on behalf of Matha Amrithanandamayi, at Saraswati Vidyaniketan High School in Chengamanad, Aluva, he said India’s success in social life was attributed to this value-based family system and education system while the West altogether had been lacking it.

“We want modernisation in education but not westernisation as it has a lot of inherent short comings while comparing with our ancient teaching system. Absence of value in education is the main cause of frustration and disappointment,” Mr. Gadkari said. To back his point, he also recalled his recent chat with British finance minister, who hailed the value-based systems followed by India.

He also emphasised the need to give more focus on quality in education to tackle the emerging opportunities and challenges.
