Work at the Kochi Metro Rail’s casting yard in Kalamassery was partially affected for the third day in a row as construction workers affiliated to regional trade unions disrupted the yard’s functioning.
“The yard already has ample number of skilled workers deployed by L&T, apart from a few dozen workers of the unions. Such frequent disruption of work by a section of union workers who are demanding jobs at the site will ultimately affect the pace of metro’s civil works. This will in turn delay work on laying tracks, signal systems etc.,” metro sources said.
Metro agencies fear that undue interference by union workers will adversely affect work culture at the site where the company has deployed skilled workers. Talks between union leaders and firm could not find a solution.
P Rajeeve, MP, and a team of DMRC officials led by Project Director P. Sriram inspected the Edappally-Kalamassery NH route where piling is under way. Mr. Rajeev cited the need to widen narrow stretches where traffic movement has been affected because of barricades at the road’s centre. Electric posts that protrude into the road at some places too are affecting traffic movement.
