Two teenagers were fatally knocked down by a taxi at Mulanthuruthy on Thursday night. Four policemen from the Piravom police station who were in the car have been suspended from service by the Ernakulam Range IG, R. Sreelekha.

The policemen were returning to Piravom after attending a send off party of their colleague. The car coming on the wrong side did not stop after knocking down the children who were riding a bicycle. Members of the public managed to trace the car by night, but the occupants gave the slip.

Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Sreelekha, who visited the accident site said that the policemen were apparently drunk, and have been taken into custody. “The driver too has been detained. The car came from the wrong side, while the children were on the correct side. The collision took place on the right side of the road, at an incline. The Muvattupuzha DySP would head the probe,” she said.

The victims, sons of brothers, Vettikal, Mulanthuruthy both of Kappalumanthadathil House are Sreejith, 14 years and Amal K Mani, 13 years. They were studying at the St Mary’s High School, Thalekkad. The detained persons are car driver Shine Raj, head constables R Vijayan, Ajikumar and Sojan and constable Stanley Xavier.

The Mulanthuruthy Police have registered a case under Sections 304-A and 279 of the Indian Penal Code - causing death by negligence and rash driving respectively.

Protest

People continued to block the Mulanthuruthy-Piravom Road on Friday. A police team led by the Ernakulam Rural SP is camping there.
