Two modernised eateries of Kudumbasree units, which will offer food at economical rates, were opened in the city.

The units, which began functioning at Ponnurunni and Edappally zonal office of the Kochi Corporation on Wednesday sport the brand name Kochi Kudumbasree Café. The modernisation and branding of the eateries were taken up as a joint venture of the Kochi Corporation and the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme (KSUDP). Financial support of Rs.10 lakh was extended to these agencies from the Poverty Social Fund of the KSUDP.

Earlier, one unit was inaugurated at the main office complex of the Kochi Corporation. One more unit will come up at Fort Kochi. These units together engage 30 women associated with Kudumbasree. Menu cards and price lists were unified for the units. The women managing these eating places were trained in preparing food in hygienic conditions and various aspects of hospitality. Modern kitchen utensils and furniture were procured and uniforms were supplied to the women.

While food will be provided at subsidised rates for the staff of the corporation offices, the general public would get food at lower rates, an official associated with the project said. Mayor Tony Chammany inaugurated the units. Standing Committee Chairpersons of Corporation, Soumini Jain, T.J. Vinod, Essy Joseph and Ratnamma Raju were among those who attended the function.
