Technologies of two major sonar systems developed by the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) at Thrikkakara were transferred to Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) at an event held at DefExpo India-2018 in Chennai the other day. The technologies of HUMSA-UG sonar and ABHAY sonar were transferred for production in the presence of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The licensing agreement for Transfer of Technology (ToT) for HUMSA-UG and ABHAY sonars was signed between NPOL Director S. Kedarnath Shenoy and BEL chairman and managing director M.V. Gowtama.

Both sonars together account for production orders of about ₹300 crore. HUMSA-UG is an upgraded version of the HUMSA-NG sonar currently in use onboard multiple ships of the Indian Navy. ABHAY is a compact hull-mounted sonar for small ships like shallow water craft, light frigates, and corvettes.
