KOCHI: Traffic around the busiest Vyttila junction is set for a major overhaul with the construction of the long-pending overbridge set to commence on November 25. The new regulations, effective from that day, were discussed at a meeting of police and PWD officials chaired by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla on Monday.

“While the aim is to make optimum use of approach roads and to avoid crossings, a final picture will be arrived at after seeking public opinion,” Mr. Safirulla said.

From November 25, container trucks arriving from Paravur or Aluva will have to enter the Seaport-Airport Road from Kalamassery HMT Junction and pass through Kakkanad, Irumpanam, Thripunithura, and Kundannoor to go either to Alappuzha or Willingdon Island. Trucks from Alappuzha or Willingdon Island will have to use the same route to travel to Aluva or Paravur.

Sahodaran Ayyappan Road will be widened where it enters Vyttila junction. The road to the north of the traffic signal cabin will also be widened and tarred to facilitate ‘free left turn’. Highway crossing to Thripunithura or Aroor-Alappuzha will not be permitted. Vehicles from SA Road bound for these places will have to take the Old Thammanam Road-Ponnurunni NH underpass to enter the other side of the highway. Parking will be banned along Old Thammanam Road. Vehicles bound for Vyttila from Thammanam will have to use the Ponnurunni underpass to reach the junction.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be instructed to dismantle bus stops and side medians between Vyttila junction and the railway overbridge. Vehicles from Thammanam overbridge will not be allowed to take right turn at landing. They have to take the turn at the signal junction. One-way system will be introduced on service roads to the underpass.

Further, light vehicles from Thripunithura will have to take left from Powerhouse Junction to enter the national highway and take U-turn at Thykoodam to further travel to Vyttila.

The road to mobility hub from Vyttila will be widened as a pillar of the Kochi metro will be constructed on the road. In case it gets difficult for buses to take a turn to the hub at this junction, the road for outbound traffic from the hub will have to be widened to also allow for vehicle entry.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) intends to complete the construction of the metro at Vyttila along with the construction of the overbridge.
