The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) will set up a women’s trade centre at Kakkanad in Ernakulam. The multi-storeyed complex is envisaged to house various wings to support entrepreneurship among women.

The project was in its conceptual stage and financial outlay was being worked out, a top official of the corporation told The Hindu . External funding is being mooted for the execution of the project.

The complex is to be established on one acre of land in possession of the corporation where a women’s hostel is situated.

The project will have an incubation section, start-up wing and facilitation centre, all exclusively for women.

The project will be part of the government’s initiative to bring women into the mainstream of society through meaningful trade and associated activities.

The project is meant to be an initiative in empowering women. Kerala Governor made a reference to the project in his speech in the Assembly on Friday.

KSWDC was launched in 1988 with a mission to address the advancement of women in Kerala. Though Kerala has achieved good results in segments such as health and education, the State is yet to take a lead in women’s entrepreneurship. KSWDC is planning to help women make significant contribution in trade and commerce, according to its officials.

KSWDC has provided job oriented training and development programmes to girls belonging to BPL families. It has also disbursed loans for encouraging women entrepreneurs.
