Toddler denied treatment at medical college, allege parents

August 09, 2016 08:43 am | Updated 08:43 am IST - KOCHI:

In yet another allegation of medical negligence at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, parents of a one-and-a-half-year old girl have complained that there were no doctors or nurses at the burns unit to provide treatment to their daughter on Sunday night.

However, the medical college authorities have denied any negligence on their part. The Principal of the medical college told The Hindu that a report was sought from the nursing supervisor at the hospital.

‘Nurses redeployed’

The supervisor said since the burns unit did not have patients, nurses in that section were redeployed to other departments. The nursing supervisor said the child was given primary nursing care and was discharged since admission was not necessary.

The child had sustained burns accidentally from scalding water on her body.

Though a doctor turned up at the casualty and asked the child to be admitted, the parents said they waited for three hours to be told that she could not be admitted since nurses were not available at the burns unit. They had the child discharged in the middle of the night and went back home to Athani after handing over a complaint to a doctor at the hospital. .

Second allegation

This is second allegation of negligence at the medical college in about a month. It was alleged that an MBBS student who died last month was not given proper treatment at the medical college hospital.
