A 53-year-old man was killed after he was hit by a tipper lorry at Koodathayi, near Omassery, early on Sunday.

The police identified the deceased as Pulparambil Muhammadali.

The police said the lorry sped away after knocking down Muhammadali who was returning from the mosque at 7.30 a.m. The vehicle was stopped by an irate mob that blocked the road less than a kilometre away from the accident site. The crowd set the vehicle ablaze. The driver, however, managed to escape.

The incident is the latest in a series of accidents involving tipper lorries in the area. A month ago, two siblings who were returning from school near Omassery were killed after a tipper lorry knocked them down.

According to the local people, tipper lorries from the nearby quarries ply recklessly in the Mukkom, Omassery, Koodaranhi and Thiruvambadi area.
