With 1,560 points Thrissur district emerged the leader at the end of the second day of intense competition at the 18th CBSE State Youth Festival being held at the Sarabhai Space Science Park here.

SN Vidya Bhavan, Chentrappinni, Thrissur, with 223 points, leading the overall points tally, and IES Public School, Chittilappilly, Thrissur, in second place with 221 points, gave the district the much needed boost in zooming ahead of Ernakulam and Kollam districts.

The Sabareesh memorial ever-rolling trophy for the winning district, made of 600 grams of gold and sponsored by Gokulam Gopalan, was handed over by Mr. Gopalan to Indira Rajan, general secretary of the CBSE Managements Association, in the presence of Benny Behanan, MLA. The trophy will be in the possession of the winning district for the first six months and will be later handed over to the first runners-up for the next three months and the second runners-up for the last three months.

Though Kozhikode has no hopes of grabbing the trophy for the winning district, Rani Public School, Vadakara, currently in third place with 208 points, is confident of reducing the deficit and capturing the overall champions trophy for the highest points in all the categories over the course of the next two days.

Ms. Rajan, convenor of the fete, said Excise Minister K. Babu would flag off the launch of model water rockets in the science park at 9 a.m. on Friday.

G. Madhavan Nair, former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation, will address students at 3:30 p.m. V.D. Satheesan MLA, will also be present.
