Two paramedical students staying at Nettoor and hailing from Perambra in Kozhikode district were reported with fever on Friday and were admitted to the District General Hospital. They are under special observation.

Another paramedical student at a private hospital in Kozhikode and a native of Cherthala was also reported with fever and was admitted to the Government Medical College, Ernakulam. He is also under observation.

The condition of all the three is stable, according to a statement issued by the district administration. The District Collector on Friday held discussions with officials on preventive steps against Nipah in the district.

As part of the precautionary measures, four samples were collected on Thursday from various hospitals where patients are undergoing treatment for viral encephalitis. They were sent to the Manipal Virology Institute for expert opinion. Of them, one sample, of a 40-year old person from Gothuruthu, has tested negative, while the results of others are awaited.

Of the other three, a two-year-old boy from Mattancherry died on Friday morning. He was being treated for inflammation in the brain. Prima facie, doctors do not suspect any viral infection in the baby’s case.

Another sample was that of a 54-year-old from Cheranelloor, who was admitted with respiratory infection. He was recovering and was discharged. The fourth sample was that of a 42-year-old person from Thrikkakara, who is also recuperating according to the hospital authorities.
