A three-year-old child and two others sustained injuries when the roof of a seven-decade-old warehouse in Mattancherry collapsed in the heavy rain on Thursday.
The injured have been identified as Fathima 32, Rahamat, 28 and her child Farhan. According to Fire and Rescue officials, the accident took place around 12.20 noon when a portion of the roof came crashing down and the debris fell over the three.
They were rushed to a hospital nearby while the remaining families were shifted out of it with the assistance of the police.
The warehouse, having a built-up area of 10,000 sqft, has been lying unused for several years until a person hired it and rented it out to families after building small cabins inside the structure. There were around 10 families residing inside, in addition to a group of migrant workers.
Though the police had earlier issued warnings on the weak building structure, the families continued to stay there, the police said.
