Forensic experts, bomb squad, dog squad, and fingerprint teams examined the site of Tuesday’s explosion near Thirkkakara on Wednesday. City Police Commissioner K.G. James also visited the scene of the explosion.

A special investigation team led by Thrikkakara assistant commissioner Bijo Alexander has been given charge of the inquiry. The police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the explosion.

“The explosion was on the road side using a low-intensity cracker. The investigation is progressing and we will have more details soon,” said Mr. Alexander. Police officers said the crackers packed in a container was set off by throwing a small country bomb at it. The police also recovered a fuse thread part of the exploded cracker.

Tuesday’s explosion also drew into focus the police’s inability to trace the persons who set off explosion at the Ernakulam district collectorate in July 2009. The case of the pipe-bomb explosion was investigated by various law enforcement agencies, with no result even after more than four years.
