Members of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church organised a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Kolenchery on Sunday in protest against a recent High Court order that the vicar of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is entitled to the keys of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church in the area.

Mass held

A tense situation prevailed on the church premises on Sunday as the Orthodox Church held a mass inside, while members of the Jacobite faction grouped outside.

Following this, a Bishop of the Jacobite faction arrived there.

The police stepped up their presence in the area.

Case against 15

A case has been registered against 15 persons of the Jacobite faction for allegedly attacking personnel of the local police and the rapid response and rescue force on Saturday night.

Renjith Vijayan, Saji and Vipin Chandran, civil police officers, have been admitted to hospital after being injured in the attack, the Puthen Cruz police said.
