A 13-year-old boy was crushed to death and two of his friends injured seriously when they were caught under a coconut tree that fell on them at Panavally near Cherthala here on Tuesday.

Nidhin, who was all set to attend Class Nine when schools re-opened next month, was enjoying a game of cricket with his classmate Ananthu, 13, and friend Prasanth, 10, on a ground near their home at Alathur in Panavally around 3 p.m. when a coconut tree fell on them. The tree, which had decayed roots, fell after other children, who were also playing on the ground, reportedly tried to climb on it.

While Nidhin died on the spot, Ananthu and Prasanth suffered grievous injuries and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cherthala. All the three are students of the Thrichattukulam NSS Higher Secondary School. Nidhin was the son of Dhanesh and Sheba.
