A survey on water consumption patterns of city dwellers and commercial units will begin in the city shortly. Volunteers would visit houses and commercial units in all the divisions of the Kochi Corporation to generate database on water use patterns as part of the water audit to be carried out in the city. A water policy for the local body will also be prepared as part of the efforts.

Information on source of drinking water, access to potable water, details of water shortage and facilities for rainwater harvesting would be sought.

Questions on the quality of drinking water provided by various agencies including tanker lorries, frequency of water supply, leakage of water and details of water bill have also been included in the questionnaire prepared by the Water Institute at SCMS School of Engineering Karukutty campus. The Institute has been assigned the task of carrying out the water audit for the Kochi Corporation.

The audit will also cover commercial buildings including offices, hospitals, hotels and schools and public transport facilities like railway stations and bus stands. The apartment complexes in the city too would be covered, Dr. George, director of the Institute, said. The 20-point questionnaire also delves deep into the facilities available in each household on rainwater harvesting, use of water for farming, gardening, keeping animals and washing vehicles. While seeking information on incidents of water-borne diseases, the survey will also look for information on use of water purifiers and purchase of bottled water.

The citizens’ initiatives for reducing water consumption, tests on water quality, information on digging new wells and repairing the existing ones, filling up of ponds and wells and whether people have moved out of the area following water shortage will also be sought. The expectations of the city residents on the service of the Kochi Corporation rain water supply have also been sought.

The data generated from the survey will be used to develop a City Water Quality Atlas. The water audit will also lead to the development of a computer modelling on saline water intrusion into inland areas of Kochi Corporation, said Mr. George. Water audit is conceived as a qualitative and quantitative analysis of water supply and demand in the city. The audit will help in identifying water-stressed wards and suggest mitigation strategies.
