July 03, 2013 01:39 am | Updated 01:39 am IST - KOCHI:

Surprise inspections will be conducted in hotels, restaurants, and other food outlets across the district for 10 days from Thursday.

District Panchayat President Eldhose Kunnappillil issued the direction to identify food outlets operating in unhygienic conditions in the wake of epidemic breakouts in various parts of the district. Reports of inspections have also been sought. He was addressing a meeting to review the epidemic prevention activities in the district at the instance of the Health Minister. Local bodies have been asked to convene sanitation sabhas to review the health and sanitation activities at the ward level. Instructions have been given to convene health and sanitation level committees to initiate action.

Mr. Kunnappillil called for steps to check the proliferation of mosquitoes in bus stands, police stations, and excise and PWD offices. Notices under the Public Health Act should be issued to establishment and house owners who have not taken action to identify and eliminate mosquito sources.
