The facility is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the government-owned agency.

The Supplyco has begun work on a seven-floor suburban hyper mall at Piravom Gramapanchayat, located on the outskirts of the district.

The 60,000-square feet facility, coming up at a 36-cents property handed over by the panchayat, is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the government-owned agency. The cost of establishing the project is estimated to be Rs.12 crore.

“It is envisaged as a place where public can buy things including home appliances at reasonable rate. In the mall, two cellar floors will be for parking and Supplyco warehouse. The office of the Piravom Panchayat will also function in one of the floors while two floors will be set aside for the Supplyco hypermarket. The mall will also include a multiplex theatre and food court,” said Anoop Jacob, Civil Supplies Minister.

Besides, the agency is also looking at leasing out commercial space for outside agencies to open store or other business ventures. The first phase of the project comprising three floors will be completed within seven months from now while the remaining works will be completed in another eight months.

According to the Minister, the facility will cater to people in as many as three districts including Alappuzha and Kottayam. The new project, mooted by former minister the late T.M. Jacob in 2011, had hit a roadblock owing to the delay in getting land. The project, however, resumed with the panchayat handing over the property at free of cost.
