Suicide of a woman, a day after she was interrogated by the Tripunithura police, led to tension in the city on Friday.
Mini, also known as Sunita, 32, was summoned by the Tripunithura police on Thursday to collect information on the whereabouts of her husband, Babu.
The latter, along with three others, was wanted in connection with a case registered for breaking into a shop and assaulting T.V. Ramachandran, Tripunithura North unit president of Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti. Babu went into hiding after the incident on April 30. Police said Babu, 42, was also wanted in a murder case and has been in the rowdy list maintained at the station.
His wife was summoned to the station at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday and made to wait there till 5 p.m.
While relatives of the deceased complained of police harassment, police officers said she was waiting in the visitor’s area all the while. She was let off after she gave the police information that Babu was at the Divine Retreat Centre in Muringoor.
The woman, believed to be under distress, is suspected to have jumped in front of a speeding train at the railway track near her house at Mathoor, Eroor, between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday. The police said the suicide note recovered from her house said she was ending her life out of remorse for divulging information that would lead to her husband’s arrest.
The body of the woman was handed over to relatives after post-mortem examination by the police surgeon at the General Hospital. The funeral procession was stopped in front of the police station on its way to the crematorium. A demonstration was organised in front of the circle inspector’s office and petitions were filed calling for a detailed probe into the incident.
