Various organisations took out protest marches in the city on Wednesday, which was observed as World Human Rights Day, in solidarity with the adivasi ‘Nilpu Samaram’ that has been going on in Thiruvananthapuram to protect the rights of the tribals.
About 1,000 students and staff of Sacred Heart College took out a ‘nilpu samaram’ of their own in front of the college to express solidarity with the tribals’ protest. Fr. Prasant Palakkapillil, principal of the college, spoke at the protest action. Students held placards demanding protection of the land rights of the adivasi people.
The students also sent about 1,000 postcards to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to stress their demand.
A campaign to collect funds for those participating in the ‘Nilpu Samaram’ was also started at the protest. Activists of the Adivasi Aikyadardhya Samithi, meanwhile, took out a march from Rajendra Maidan on Wednesday evening demanding speedy action from the government. Various other groups organised protest meetings.
