KOCHI: The district administration has instructed commercial and residential units located on the banks of Muttar river and its rivulets not to dump waste into the waterbody.

Prohibiting dumping of waste, the administration also issued orders asking commercial establishments and homes to process waste at their own holdings.

The district administration has also formed a committee to oversee the processing of waste by invoking the provisions of the Disaster Management Act. Commercial establishments that fail to install adequate waste processing facilities will not be allowed to function, said a communication from the administration.

An eight-member committee has also been formed to inspect houses and commercial establishments on the banks of the river.

It was following complaints that the water body was being polluted due to dumping of waste that the district administration swung into action. District Collector K. Muhammad Y. Safarulla had also visited the polluted stretches of the river.
