The stench emanating from a drain that carries waste water from a slaughter house in Tripunithura market is making life difficult for those living in police quarters and in areas on the side of the Hill Palace road.
“We cannot open the windows, especially in the morning,” said M.K. Thankamani, ASI, Police Control Room. He has been staying in the quarters for the past eight years. “We can see the meat and fish waste that accumulate at the end of the drain,” he said. He added the rainy season was comparatively better since the downpour washed away the waste.
Journalist K.K. Pappukutty, a resident, said the wind carried the foul smell to his house, though the house was located at least 50 metres away from the drain.
There is a point where a marshy land lies and you won’t be able to separate it from the drain. Mr. Thankamani said the drain had length up to the side of the railway line and then turned into a canal. However, now there is no sign of the canal or the drain. Puspamani, the ward councillor said the canal got filled up when the Railways was carrying out the line doubling work.
Chairman of Tripunithura Municipality R. Venugopal, told The Hindu that there were plans to shift the slaughter house and the fish market to another place.
The Health Standing Committee chairman, T. K. Suresh, said that plans were afoot to put pipes in the drain to carry waste water.
