Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Principal Advisor E. Sreedharan has expressed concern over men and machinery idling at Kochi Metro’s casting yard at HMT, Kalamassery, due to the interference of trade unions.

The ‘passive’ approach of the district-level Labour Disputes Redress Committee (headed by the District Collector) to the issue was to be blamed, he told mediapersons here on Tuesday.

Dozens of unskilled people were intruding into the worksite frequently, demanding work and wages, he said. The Kochi Metro’s proposed commissioning in 2016 would suffer if such trends continued, he said after visiting the worksites at Muttom and Edappally.

As per schedule, all girders along the Aluva-international stadium stretch had to be launched by January 2015. The rest of the work could be taken up after this. Each day’s delay in commissioning the project would increase the cost by Rs.40 lakh, Mr. Sreedharan said.
