Spurt in dengue fever cases in the district is keeping Health authorities on their toes. There were 230 suspected dengue fever cases last month, but only 26 cases were confirmed.
Death of a 11-year-old child last week in the district is suspected to be caused by dengue fever. However, Health authorities are yet to confirm it.
According to Additional District Medical Officer Dr. Sreedevi, Neriamangalm, Keezhmadu and Perumbavoor have reported more cases. Health officials had managed to contain the disease in Neriamangalam, she said. No new cases were reported after May 26, she said.
“Vallam in Perumbavoor has seen a spurt in illnesses, especially in the Rayonpuram area which has a 50-acre campus where waste is dumped. Scrap dealers have been dumping waste in the area which also has plastic shredding units,” said Dr. Sreedevi.
A Health team had found that many migrant workers were living in unhygienic environment in the area.
District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, who visited the area along with the disaster management team and other officials, had ordered to clear the debris from the area. The area is under the ownership of Kinfra.
Leptospirosis cases are likely to go up this month as rainwater causes the spread of the bacteria. The microbes thrive in rat urine. There were 14 suspected cases in May and one case was confirmed. This month, four suspected cases and four confirmed cases have been reported from the district.
In the wake of the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode, personal protection equipment have been distributed to hospitals such as the District General Hospital, Aluva District Hospital and the Government Medical College, Kalamassery, where isolation wards have also been set up.
