Spices export from India, helped by large shipments of chilli, grew 35% in volume in the first quarter of the current financial year, earning ₹4,589 crore. A Spices Board press release said that volumes rose to 3,06,990 tonnes during the April-June 2017 period as compared to 2,27, 938 tonnes during the same period in 2016–17.
With a shipment of 1,33,000 tonnes, fetching ₹1,198 crore, chilli is the most exported spice from India during the April-June 2017 period.
The Spices Board statement cited the Board Chairman, A. Jayathilak, as saying that chilli had been in great demand and Indian exports had fulfilled the increasing international demand for quality spices in the global markets.
The Board’s efforts to promote garlic have resulted in substantial increase in its exports.
