KOCHI: The Ernakulam North police on Thursday arrested two persons on charge of smuggling liquor from the Union Territory of Mahi.

The youths, who were identified as Sulby (37) and Niyas (27, both natives of Kollam, were arrested during a routine vehicle checking on Kaloor-Kathrikadavu road.

The police also examined their baggage after finding them suspicious during the questioning and found 26 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) stashed inside the bag. The accused had smuggled the alcohol into the city for resale at higher prices.

The checking followed information about the possibility of illicit liquor and foreign liquor being smuggled into the city as there is an increase in demand for liquor during the festival season.

The police booked the two accused under Section 55-A of the Abkari Act. They were remanded in judicial custody.
