Smart classrooms for Kochi colleges

June 05, 2014 09:55 am | Updated 09:55 am IST - KOCHI:

Soon a student sitting in her classroom at Govt. Arts College in Tripunithura would watch live a Physics Professor at Ernakulam Maharaja’s College delivering an expert lecture on Thermodynamics or Special Theory of Relativity.

Come August and thousands of students in three government colleges and one aided college in Ernakulam would together experience a technology-aided learning method thanks to a smart classroom.

The ambitious IT@College initiated by the Kerala State Higher Education Council will be rolled out as a pilot programme in the Ernakulam cluster of colleges that include Maharaja’s College, Govt. Arts College, Tripunithura, Govt. Sanskrit College, Tripunithura, and Cochin College.

“The smart classroom to be set up at Maharaja’s College would act as a virtual classroom. Students in other colleges would watch real-time the expert lectures taken here,” says Varghese.C. Abraham, Principal of Maharaja’s.

Even though the technical modalities are being worked out, Prof. Abraham said it would provide an exciting teaching-learning method where students get a chance to listen to a wide variety of faculty members on different topics.

The cluster of colleges would enjoy a high-speed broadband connectivity as part of the implementation of the state-of-the-art IT@College initiative.

The proposal to roll out the project was discussed at a meeting of Principals convened by the State Higher Education Council recently.

The council plans to implement massive open online courses (MOOC) and e-learning portal projects as part of the IT@School initiative.
